Here at projectfive, we’re big believers in nurturing young talent, which is why we’ve been hiring apprentices for the last 9 years.
Our Operations Manager, Phil Dear, explains why this is an important part of our business strategy:
“Finding high quality talent in our industry and region is always a challenge, so investing in Apprentices allows us to get those talented people first and then nurture and develop them in line with our core values. This has led to us having a younger, more talented and better qualified team, who are frankly a lot of fun to be around.”
As part of National Apprenticeship Week, we spoke to our most recent apprentice, Ryan, to find out why he chose to do an apprenticeship.
RyanWilliams, Apprentice Technical Engineer
Why did you choose to do an apprenticeship?
I started my career in accountancy, but soon realised it wasn’t for me. I’d always had an interest in IT, so I chose to do an apprenticeship because it’s a great way to get a foot in the door. It is also a brilliant opportunity to learn while you work.
What have you gained from being in the workplace and learning at the same time?
I find that learning on the job is the best way, because you are learning exactly what you will need to know and use, in the future. In my case, I’m also surrounded by very knowledgeable technicians who are more than happy to help where necessary. It also gives you the added benefit of workplace experience, which is key when looking to progress in your chosen career.
What would you say to someone who’s thinking of doing an apprenticeship?
Go for it! It’s a great way to start or change career, and it means you can learn (and earn) while you work.
