Hello!

Happy New Year!

I hope you've all had a successful start to 2010 and have managed to find the grit and determination to keep your business open during the 'big freeze'.

If you've had troubles getting access to your technology, this month's techbytes has a great article to help you prepare for next time.

There's also an interesting discussion that I'd love your feedback on - and that's 'is 2009 the year that the Christmas Card died?'.

I look forward to catching up with you soon.

Steve Coburn.

Business Continuity in the everyday, snow-affected real world.

We often try to engage people in conversations about Business Continuity and their over-riding feeling is that ‘it won’t happen to me’.

For many, the idea of Business Continuity is all about recovering from a Fire, Bomb, Earthquake or another catastrophic event that may befall the office.  And, in such a circumstance, it’s easy to see why the ‘it won’t happen to me’ feeling prevails.

But, this week saw many to view Business Continuity as a very real issue as they struggled to keep their businesses open during the Big Freeze.

Was 2009 the end of the Christmas Card for businesses?

At home, we continued to receive the same number of Christmas Cards from long-lost friends and far-flung relatives – the tradition of sending and receiving Christmas wishes in a Christmas Card remained unaffected by the recent Postal Strikes or our desires to ‘go green’.

But, in business, I noticed a very strong shift away from the Christmas Card.  We received far fewer Christmas Cards than ever before – yet we sent more than in previous years.  At the same time, our inboxes were over-flowing with ‘electronic’ Christmas Greetings – and then there were the LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter messages too.

What does this mean for Christmas 2010? What should we be doing? Read on...

Managing Security of Personal Data
- Angela Cornelius, TRG law

This month's Guest Article is from local law firm partner, Angela Cornelius of TRG Law. Angela begins...

"You might have seen recent headlines about organisations who keep data on employees and customers being scolded by the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) for having insufficient protections in place to ensure data they hold is kept secure, for example, when laptops containing personal information have been stolen.

These cases have concerned breaches of the data protection principle governing security., which requires appropriate technical and organisational measures to be taken to prevent unauthorised or unlawful processing of personal data and accidental loss or destruction of, or damage to, personal data."

More Twin Screen ideas

Last year’s article on using two-screens on your computer prompted a lot of response – so we thought we’d do a little follow-up for you.

Many of you agreed and said that it has transformed the way in which you use your computer and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it.  Plus, we’ve had a whole bunch of people requesting a second monitor for their PCs – amazing what a difference an article can make to your sales!
